Port of Sines

The Port of Sines leads the Portuguese port sector in the volume of cargo handled. It is an open deep-water sea port with excellent maritime access, without restrictions, leading, and offering unique natural characteristics to receive any type of vessels. Due to its modern specialized terminals, the port is able to handle the different types of cargoes.

Its strategic location, on the cross of the main international maritime routes – East-West and North-South, in Southwest Europe along with its natural characteristics, allow the Port to be positioned as the great hub port of the Ibero-Atlantic front.

The Port of Sines is managed by Administração do Porto de Sines, S.A.,a wholly public owned PLC, with the role to ensure the exercising of competences needed for the smooth operation of the port of Sines in its multiple facets of an economic, financial and property nature, the staff management and port operation as well as attendant, subsidiary and accessory activities.

Port of Sines was built recently (1978), free of urban constraints, thus assuring long-term expansion capacity. It offers good land accessibility for traffic and it is included in a road and rail development plan, allowing to respond to an expected future growth of both the port and the region.

The port integrates 5 specialized terminals:

The TGLS – Liquid Bulk Terminal: is the largest liquid bulk terminal in the country. It has a network of pipelines for moving products between the port, the adjoining tanking area and the ZILS – Sines Industrial and Logistics Area. The TGLS is operated by CLT – Companhia Logística de Terminais Marítimos, a company part of the Galp Energia Group, who was awarded the concession of the Public Service and the handling of cargo in the Terminal.

Petrochemical Terminal (TPQ):It allows the handling of goods via a dedicated pipeline between vessels and the petrochemical complex located in ZILS – Sines Industrial and Logistics Area of Sines. This terminal is run by Repsol Polímeros on a private use concession regime.

Multipurpose & Ro-Ro Terminal: This terminal is geared towards handling solid bulk, general cargo and ro-ro. This terminal is under a public service concession granted to the company Portsines.

LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) Terminal: The TGN – Natural Gas Terminal is the main national source for supplying this product and is of great national strategic importance since it is an alternative to the terrestrial gas pipeline. It runs under a private use concession by the company REN Atlântico, today handling over 50% of the Natural Gas consumed in Portugal.
